Generalized Instrumental Variables

چکیده
This paper concerns the assessment of direct causal effects from a combination of: (i) non experimental data, and (ii) qualitative do main knowledge. Domain knowledge is en coded in the form of a directed acyclic graph (DAG), in which all interactions are assumed linear, and some variables are presumed to be unobserved. We provide a generalization of the well-known method of Instrumental Vari ables, which allows its application to models with few conditional independeces.

On Searching for Generalized Instrumental Variables
Instrumental Variables are a popular way to identify the direct causal effect of a random variable X on a variable Y . Often no single instrumental variable exists, although it is still possible to find a set of generalized instrumental variables (GIVs) and identify the causal effect of all these variables at once. Till now it was not known how to find GIVs systematically or even test efficient...
متن کاملOn the Interpretation of Instrumental Variables in the Presence of Specification Errors
The method of instrumental variables (IV) and the generalized method of moments (GMM), and their applications to the estimation of errors-in-variables and simultaneous equations models in econometrics, require data on a sufficient number of instrumental variables that are both exogenous and relevant. We argue that, in general, such instruments (weak or strong) cannot exist.
متن کاملGeneralized instrumental variable models
The ability to allow for flexible forms of unobserved heterogeneity is an essential ingredient in modern microeconometrics. In this paper we extend the application of instrumental variable (IV) methods to a wide class of problems in which multiple values of unobservable variables can be associated with particular combinations of observed endogenous and exogenous variables. In our Generalized In...
متن کاملSargan’s Instrumental Variables Estimation and the Generalized Method of Moments
This article surveys J. D. Sargan’s work on instrumental variables (IV) estimation and its connections with the generalized method of moments (GMM). First the modeling context in which Sargan motivated IV estimation is presented. Then the theory of IV estimation as developed by Sargan is discussed. His approach to efficiency, his minimax estimator, tests of overidentification and underidentific...
متن کاملRecursive Generalized Total Least Squares with Noise Covariance Estimation
We propose a recursive generalized total least-squares (RGTLS) estimator that is used in parallel with a noise covariance estimator (NCE) to solve the errors-in-variables problem for multi-input-single-output linear systems with unknown noise covariance matrix. Simulation experiments show that the suggested RGTLS with NCE procedure outperforms the common recursive least squares (RLS) and recurs...
